NaNoWriMo Day 17

The Words: 3248 written today.  Just a tad shy of my goal, but not bad! I went to a write-in today, where there were 3 of us writing. There wasn’t as much conversation this time, but lots of writing. All of my words came during that time.

This evening, I had another Skype meeting with my editing group. We got through the rest of the draft without any real issues. Now we’re down to broad strokes we want to discuss, which we’ll hopefully get all out of the way in one fell swoop some time in the next few months. We’re wanting to have an in-person meeting, though, because it’ll be easier to converse and discuss, since the Skype process can be difficult sometimes. So I didn’t have my normal evening writing time, but thank goodness for the write-in!

The Story: We meet Jonathan’s apprentice, Marct, as the two of them discuss how or when to start moving equipment and supplies out of the shop they’d set up in their team’s building. And later, Missy has the depressing task of gathering up her own workspace. She is an apothecary, using herbs and other ingredients to make medicines and such. She has a lot of smaller and more fragile supplies to move.

Missy is joined by a team member who offers to help. The day’s writing stopped just as this other team member finds a piece of paper on the floor that doesn’t belong there.

NaNoWriMo Day 16

The Words: 3426 written today.  I had a migraine most of the afternoon, and still had a decent headache going into my writing time. It actually eased up pretty quickly once I started writing, allowing me to go for a few hours and get the word count you see.

Since I put the final words into the novel I started the month with, I had to make a decision today. I’d always figured I’d just go onto another novel I had in mind if I did finish the other one early, but I started to realize some possible negative implications in doing that. If I don’t finish the second novel this month, it’ll most likely sit untouched and unfinished until next November. And I don’t like the idea of starting into an already-started novel at the beginning of NaNo (not just because it’s technically against the rules and would make me a rebel, but because I prefer to be able to start fresh). But I also don’t want to just call NaNo over for the year yet.

Other options I considered were using the rest of the month for revision, and tracking time spent, rather than words. But that’s just not as fun or exciting, and you can’t do word sprints or wars. I also thought about just writing random stuff from prompts or working on smaller stories, but I thought that would just be more difficult to keep going through the month.

So I’ve decided to start on a second novel. I have 15 days to get as far into it as I can. My plan for right now is to aim for a daily word count of 3333 words (twice the normal daily amount), in an attempt to get 50k words of it done before November ends. But since it’s an extra goal, and I’ve already had some rough times this month, I won’t be holding myself too strictly to that. It’s just something to aim for.

The Story: When I get a chance, I’ll try to come up with a proper synopsis for this story, so I can share it here and on the NaNo site. And a title, even if just a working title, because I have no ideas for one yet. For now, I’ll just dive into what’s going on.

The main character, Jonathan, and his War Games team have recently been evicted from the building in which they’ve been living for a while. They have 24 hours to vacate, and we peek in on some of the packing that’s happening. We meet some of the other members of the team, as well as the team’s leader, who is heavily stressing out over the events that led to their eviction.

Jonathan is the team’s official blacksmith (yes, more smiths), who makes bladed weapons for his teammates. He has a small set-up in the building, so he has a lot of equipment to move out. First, though, he has to contact his wife, who was away on a mission when everything happened. She’s upset that she’s unable to be there to help him pack their things.

Daily Challenge Check-in: October 1, 2015

Words/Time: 23 minutes working on developing the plot for my 2015 NaNoNovel. I’ve semi-officially decided that I’m going to write a murder-mystery novel tentatively titled “Murder at the Rendezvous.” I’m nervous about it, because I’ve never written any kind of mystery story. Also because the plan is for the story to be a lighthearted take on the genre, and I’m not sure I’m good at light, comical writing. So this will certainly be a challenge to me in many ways.

The reason I say it’s semi-official is because I am not above changing my mind at the last minute. Some may find this lazy or cheap, but until a month ago, I had planned to write another novel in my “Pithea” world. It’s around two-thirds outlined already. If in the next month I don’t produce a solid enough outline for this story, I will fall back on the previous plan. I would rather put “Murder at the Rendezvous” on a shelf, maybe trying again next year, than to risk wasting NaNoWriMo. Besides, it’s not even like I’d be wimping out on the challenge of writing something I’m not used to. The novel I’ve already partially outlined is a mystery/suspense novel…no matter which way I turn, it appears I’m writing mystery this year.

I won’t post anymore daily check-ins until Sunday or Monday. I’ll be out of town this weekend, attending a rendezvous. My dad demonstrates blacksmithing at historical reenactments, and I go along to some of them to sell his products. The next two weekends are our biggest shows of the year. (This weekend is Feast of the Hunter’s Moon in West Lafayette, IN, if anyone happens to live nearby. It’s a pretty big deal.) This year, I’ll be paying more attention to my surroundings than usual at these shows, because I’m basing the setting of my novel on these events. This will probably be the biggest case of “write what you know” I’ve ever done.

Daily Challenge Check-in: August 8, 2015

Words/Time: 4 hours,  mostly revising “Pithea.” I worked for anywhere from 30-50 minute sessions at various times of the day today. Most of what I did today involved working through a section that was really unorganized. There was a lot of crossing out, a lot of rewriting, and also a lot of moving whole sections around. Considering that it took me several hours to get to where I’m finally almost past that part, I think it was a good thing it happened like this. If I’d had to sort through this mess over 30-60 minute sessions on normal evenings, I think it may have led to a lack of interest, because I would have felt like I was getting nowhere. So this actually worked out well.

Considering that I was alone in a trailer in the middle of a campground, with nothing to do but relax, I suppose 4 hours doesn’t sound like a lot. I’m happy with it though. Let’s face it, with 2 kids at home, one of which is only 5, I needed a lot of this time just to do whatever I wanted to do, and sometimes that included playing Nancy Drew, while other times it included revising.

At one point, it even included brainstorming ideas for the story that has to come after “Pursuit of Power.” I haven’t decided yet what story I’m going to write for NaNoWriMo this year. It will either be that sequel to “Pursuit of Power” (though I really have only very vague ideas for that one so far) or it will be a story about a character named Jonathan, who is minorly introduced in “Pithea,” but is a much bigger deal in my mind. That story has a lot more planned for it, but is missing something before the climax. However, though that story is further in its development, I can’t help but feel it would be smarter to continue Alexander’s story (which is “Pursuit of Power”) before I get too far away from it. So I need to figure out what the continuation of his story will even entail.

And today was a continuation of my writer’s retreat. I still have tonight, as late as I can manage to stay up, and tomorrow until around 5 to find a balance between relaxing and story work. Hopefully I’ll have another big report for tomorrow.

Daily Challenge Check-in: May 9, 2015

Words: using my normal format, 8000 (in the form of 4 hours) doing various tasks. I started a plot outline for one of two stories I may write for NaNoWriMo this November in Scrivener. Yesterday, I used Scrivener to organize a novel that’s already written and being revised. I still didn’t finish getting it all in, and I’m not sure it’ll do me any good if I do. But in my pursuit of finding out why I should use Scrivener, I thought it would be good to look at the other end of the creative pursuit–plotting a new story, rather than working on a written one. I even did shallow character sheets on 6 characters, and got just a bit of insight into some more minor ones than I’d had. The story isn’t fully plotted, as there is a big gap before the climax, where the investigating and learning the truth and such need to happen. But it was a really good start. Of course, the real test of the program won’t happen until it’s time to use the outlined scenes to actually write, but that won’t happen until November. Given the 30-day limit on the free trial, I’ll need to have made my decision by then.
