Daily Writing Check-in: January 10, 2019

Words/Time: 43 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I read through more of the story, making broad changes and taking notes for other issues that need addressed (though there have still been no new notes to take yet). Today I got through 38 pages of 435, ending on page 123.

I don’t really know how much better I’m making the story right now, but I still think my friend will enjoy it when I’m ready for him to read it. I can worry about making it great later (not that it’s terrible now).

Words/Time: 34 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I read through more of the story, making broad changes and taking notes for other issues that need addressed (though so far there have been no notes to take). Today I got through 46 pages of 435, which puts me on pace to have this done in just over a week.

I should say, it’s not that there are no bigger changes to make (I mean, I still have some items on a list that I decided should wait until after I get this “good enough” to be read by a friend who has been itching to read it), but nothing besides some huge questions I have about leaving in entire sections of the story. I’m putting that off for later too. My friend won’t mind reading sections that might get cut later.

I am very glad for a daily challenge that isn’t impossible to reach, and keeps me moving forward, even at a slow pace. I’m just happy to get some work in these days.

Words/Time: 36 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I’m reading through the story now, making broad changes and taking notes for other issues that need addressed. So far it’s been going pretty well. I’m on page 39 of 435, and I’ve done well so far ignoring line edits that I could be making, and instead looking for the broader issues.

I always copy a previous post when making these updates, so I can skip having to adjust some of the settings, tags and the like. But far too often, I forget to change the title of the post to the current day…I always wonder if anyone actually notices that.

Daily Writing Check-in: January 7, 2019

Words/Time: 32 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I completed 1 item in my list of things to revise, which was the last one I needed to do before I start to read through the entire story, making broad changes and taking notes for other issues that need addressed. I’m going to try to stick to mostly reading and making notes  to change things later, because the more I stop to fix things along the way, the more disjointed the read-through will be.

I took the last 3 days as a break from writing, at first because I was sick, and then just because it was nice to relax a bit after the busyness of the holidays. I also realized late in the day that it was Monday, and decided it would be better to skip this week’s Monday Moment post. I certainly hope this lowered desire to do writing work isn’t indicative of a break coming already, but I will endeavor to push on.

Words/Time: 30 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I completed 1 item in my list of things to revise, which was finishing the scene I started yesterday, and figuring out how to make it fit into the story. I only have a few items left on the list before I’m finally ready to just read through the whole story again. I believe it will be the first time reading it from beginning to end since I wrote it. I have 8 things on my list that I will be watching to revise on the way, and will of course revise other things that come up along the way. I’ll take notes on larger issues that aren’t necessary to change now, for this early revision, and I’m hoping that by the time I’m done with that step, I will be able to call this first revision finished, and allow a person or two to read the book.

Daily Writing Check-in: January 2, 2019

Words/Time: 357 words written, which took maybe 15 minutes (I didn’t pay close attention to the clock, but I’m calling it 15 for my goal tracker.)

I was pretty happy to do any work today. A stomach bug worked its way through my family over the last week, and today it hit me. I was asleep most of the afternoon and evening. Even when I was awake, I didn’t have my list of things to revise, because I left it at my parents’ house yesterday. My husband brought it home this evening, and I managed to squeeze in a little work, which entailed writing a new scene to include in “Pursuit of Power.”

Words/Time: 42 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

I completed 4 items in my list of things to revise again, which made me happy! Though I added yet another item to the bottom of the list. It seems like it’s never going to end, and this is just the early revision.

goal tracker Dec 2018

I am starting a new goal tracker on the NaNoWriMo website for January. December went so well that I have decided to up my daily goal to an average of a half hour a day. I’m not sure this is necessary, because I also know that if I start to fall behind, I won’t push myself to catch back up. That goes against the nature of this daily writing challenge. And during December, I definitely didn’t have to push myself to reach the daily goal more than a very small amount. But I’m doing it anyway, just in case it helps.

Daily Writing Check-in: December 30, 2018

Words/Time: 1 hour, 2 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

Most of that time was spent working on an item in my second list of things to revise, the same item as yesterday. While trying to add some glimpses into the personal life of my secondary main character, I had to make a small edit to my timeline. I realized that she thought of the main character as too young for something he wanted to do, but I wasn’t sure he was really young enough. I tried to change his age, but that didn’t really work out.

In dealing with this issue, I realized that the secondary main character is too young, considering that she was younger than some of the side characters in “Pithea” that she’s definitely meant to be older and more experienced than. So I aged her a bit.

Then I added in one of the scenes I wrote as writing practice a few years ago, which I think is great for the story. Tomorrow, I’ll add another scene (and probably play with the timeline a bit more).

I doubled my goal of time spent working on writing this month!

Daily Writing Check-in: December 29, 2018

Words/Time: 44 minutes doing some early revision of “Pursuit of Power.”

Most of that time was spent working on an item in my second list of things to revise. The plan is to add in some glimpses into the secondary main character’s personal life, since she is not shown in that way very much so far. I’ve already written a scene or two that I can include, but for the first one, I have to get the area where it’s going to go ready. This involves once again comparing a scene that is in both “Pursuit of Power” and “Pithea,” and figuring out how much of it belongs in which book. This is where I will continue tomorrow as well.
