November Writing Challenge Day 28

The Words: 3606 words today and 50k achieved! After yesterday, I realized I was only around 3500 words away from the end and knew I’d feel ridiculous if I took 3 more days to write that many words. I used to crank 2500-3000 words out daily during November. I didn’t have the time to devote to that most days this month, but I did today, so I set out to hit 50k and did it!

The Story: After hashing out some important details yesterday, I started a pivotal scene from yesterday over, and got to write a fairly momentous moment. I kind of stopped right before a huge reveal, and since I wasn’t really writing a draft of a book, I don’t know if I’ll ever get back to this. But knowing myself as I do, I wouldn’t be surprised if plenty of what I wrote today will end up in some book in the future after all. It will need a lot of fixing up, though, and not just fixing typos and mistakes. I wrote some things that I realized later were incorrect, so it may be more of an inspiration for future writing than directly used. Still, this was an interesting exploration of a place and time that was just a nebulous void before this month, so it’s pure win!

Since this is my last day of writing, I want to make sure to share the final episode of the NaNoMusical. Be sure to watch the wrap-up!

November Writing Challenge Day 27

The Words: 1287 words today, not bad for Thanksgiving day! I’m so close to the end. In past years, I’d easily knock that much out in one day, but this year has just been so rough.

The Story: I started a new scene today, one I had sort of written about in a past, but briefly, in a character interview with one of the participants. But I’ve changed how I want this to go down since then, and then while I was writing the scene today I questioned even some of that. So I ended up doing some brainstorming to try to figure out how I really wanted the scene to go. Then where I ended up meant that I needed to re-start the scene, so I ended it there and will work on that tomorrow.

November Writing Challenge Day 26

The Words: 1666 words today, about as close to exactly par as I’ve gotten all month. I thought about stopping at 1200 words, since I got such a late start tonight, but I remembered that I may not get more than a few hundred words tomorrow, so I need to save my lead for that.

The Story: I moved on to a completely new scene today, which was actually something that connects more directly with the novel I’m working to publish soon, “Power.” It was fun and a little sad. tomorrow I will probably go another entirely new direction that promises to be quite interesting too.

November Writing Challenge Day 19

The Words: 1866 words today that were actually all in the form of brainstorming. I finally got to a point where the story, which was barely a story to start with, was going nowhere and I had to come up with some scenes to start into. Most of what I brainstormed were just things I already knew was going to happen because they coincide with “Power,” and I really want to try to include a few things that are completely unique to Garend, but I’ll go with what I came up with for now.

This is a good time to watch episode 4 of the NaNoMusical, where things really heat up!

November Writing Challenge Day 13

The Words: 2008 words total for the day, in a sort of repeat of yesterday. I knew I’d be gone in the evening again and that when I got home, I’d probably be doing work around the house until it was time to go to bed. So I carved out 30 minutes in the afternoon and wrote. I thought yesterday’s 1800 words might be a record for a 30-minute sprint for me, but I was really surprised to see today’s count. I didn’t feel like I was typing any faster, so the difference might have been that today I wrote on my computer, while yesterday I wrote on my Freewrite Alpha at the table, which is higher than the keyboard tray on my desk. It’s not super comfortable to write there, plus it’s a smaller keyboard, so I think I type slower overall on the Alpha. Or maybe the words just really flowed today.

The Story: Garend had to incriminate himself by revealing that he’d shared a secret he’d been told not to share with Lex, his mom, and a third character in “Power,” the book I’m nearing publication with. His fears about destroying their lives is finally put to rest, and hopefully (for both our sakes) he’ll be able to move on from this evaluation soon. When my husband suggested showing Garend in Newland because of his story arc in “Power,” I’ll be he expected Garend to actually make it to Newland.

If the week 2 blahs have got you down (or even if they don’t), it’s a good time to check out the 3rd episode of the NaNoMusical!

November Writing Challenge Day 1

Okay, so it doesn’t roll off the tongue like NaNoWriMo does, but oh well. I am tracking my progress with a challenge called Novel November, but I’m not particularly attached to the name or the site (which is just a sales site for some kind of writing tool). So I’m making it my own this year.

The Words: 3632 words total for the day. I started right at midnight just like old times (it’s only been 3 years since I did this last, but man did it feel like longer) and did 2 15-minute sprints before going to bed. That got me to 1800 words, which was already more than the one-day goal of 1667. Then couple of sprints this evening–one 20 minutes and one 15–got me the rest.

So far I’m using my Freewrite Alpha, which is new since I last had much to actually write (mostly I’ve been doing revising work for a while now), so it’s taken some getting used to. But I do love the mechanical keyboard feel and sound.

The Story: Up until a week ago, I had no idea what I might write this month. I thought I’d end up just freewriting with prompts every day. So when my husband gave me a brilliant idea last Sunday, I only had a week to think about it. But in truth, I didn’t need to do any planning. I’m basically just writing about a side character in the book I’m currently revising to hopefully publish within a few months, “Power,” who has a story arc that takes him out of the book and onto his own adventures. What happens to him doesn’t really come back into play for a long time, and it’s not front and center in any of the future books I have planned. But my husband suggested I write about what he gets up to in a far off land that will be front and center in a later book. And since that gives me a chance to explore that place that so far has been a fairly nebulous future idea, I jumped at the idea!

So today I wrote about Garend, who has had a visitor from a stranger that wants to be part of his life. The stranger told him of a far-off land (we’ll call it Newland for the sake of avoiding potential spoilers) that, though he wants nothing to do with the stranger, he can’t help but be intrigued about.

Garend, who overall has a minor role in “Power” came out a lot more in my writing today, and apparently he’s a man who holds a grudge. Who knew?

And in honor of November 1st, because even if it’s not really NaNoWriMo, the NaNoMusical still showcases the spirit of writing 50,000 words in 30 days. Plus, I can’t help but love spreading the NaNoMusical love, so here is episode 1!

Cover Reveal: Power

This will be the cover for my third full-length novel, book #3 in the Pithea series, which will most likely be released early next year. I’ll post about that when it gets closer. Below is the synopsis for the book:

For as long as Alexander Surett can remember, he’s planned to be a bounty hunter like his dad, bringing in criminals to stand trial. And when he gets his first taste of Power usage, he knows that the Power is what he will use to chase those criminals. But during the years-long training on the way to that goal, he stumbles onto an innocuous item from his dad’s past that leads him to question everything he’s been told. Soon it becomes clear that his family’s past tragedy is only the tip of the iceberg.

He brings his unwitting training partner, a Cleric named Leahna Isa, along on his search for answers, and together they attract the unwanted attention of the leader of a band of mercenaries. Rusalki Morano doesn’t like to be told “no,” and the consequences will have devastating effects on both Alexander’s and Leahna’s families—and all of Pithea.

Weekly Writing Update: 3/31

I continued reading book #3 (“Power”) out loud this past week, managing to get 20 minutes in every day. It continues to be a huge benefit—necessity, even—as I wait for my sisters to read it and give me their feedback as well. Hopefully this will be the last intensive revision the book needs before it’s ready to be published, but we’ll see what they say when they get through it too.

While I work on continuing the series, if you’re interested in reading where it all starts, Pithea is available on Amazon in multiple formats (e-book, paperback, and now in hardcover) as well as Kindle Unlimited.

Weekly Writing Update: 3/24

After an entire week of no writing (3/11-3/17) due to extra work demands and an urgent deadline for VBS prep, I picked it up a bit last week. Though I still didn’t write 20 minutes every day, I did extra some days to at least be able to average it out to 20 minutes every day. I’m continuing with reading book #3 (“Power”) out loud, which helps me notice dialog that is awkward, prose that could use adjusting, or even errors and typos that I had missed. It’s turning out that I missed a lot on what I thought was a really comprehensive revision, which is awkward, since I printed a copy before this read-through for one of my sisters to read and give me feedback. And now I know that there are a lot of mistakes or clumsy-sounding areas…

Weekly Writing Update: 3/10

Last week was a much more intentional, productive week, in regards to working on my writing. I’ve hit a bit of a stride, which comes more easily when the work I’m doing is more enjoyable or just otherwise flowing smoothly. I spent all week reading more of book #3 (“Power”) out loud, because that helps me notice dialog that is awkward, prose that could use adjusting, or even errors and typos that I had missed (which has turned out to be more than I would have hoped, since I thought I caught a lot on the previous revision. I’ve been really getting into the story again, which I take as a good thing, because it means that I, at least, enjoy it. Hopefully others will too!
