NaNoWriMo Day 4

The Words: 4550 written today, all on my Neo. I didn’t write any last night after midnight, because I knew I’d have plenty of time throughout today to write. Just as I was about to start writing my first words today, I remembered that my home region recently started up a Slack group, so I joined that quickly, and was able to participate in some word wars with a few fellow Wrimos from my region. As helpful as writing with NaNoWordSprints is, I prefer more direct sprints and wars if possible. After getting the daily word goal, I took a break, and then caught a #1k30min on Twitter later, which netted me 1500 more words.

The Story: In today’s writing, we learn about the time that Lorrin spent in a southern region during a particularly brutal war with a very dangerous man. The war is in the background right now though, as some base drama leads to Lorrin being sent to a more remote location to help out with an unusual situation there. As she tries to figure out why local animals are behaving so strangely, she meets a man who does not want her or her fellow soldiers’ help.

Truth be told, they will never come to understand what is going on with the animals, and I am struggling to figure out how (and if) they can even stop the problem, or if it will be a continuous problem. This is the first way in which this story actually connects to my main story world.

NaNoWriMo Day 3

The Words: 3384 on day 3. I got about 2000 words last night after midnight, and the rest with a #1k30min alongside NaNoWordSprints this evening.

The Story: In today’s writing, we saw the prince’s heart for diplomacy, even while his father believes they will never be able to make peace with their northern neighbors. Then, in present times, the king and prince arrive at the northern base, where our MC is the commanding officer. Lorrin takes the king for a tour of the settlement, which takes us into another flashback about how Lorrin came to be commander of this base.

I should probably mention at this point that my plan for this book is that it is basically all told through flashbacks. I don’t know how it will turn out, but I’m going with it for now.

NaNoWriMo Day 2

The Words: 2538 on day 2. I was expecting to have a project to work on for my job this morning or afternoon, something that I expected to take 5-6 hours. After lunch, when the project hadn’t been sent to me yet, I decided that I needed to write while I waited, because if the project came very late, finishing it may cut into my evening writing time.

The project never came (though it probably will tomorrow), so I got my writing done in the afternoon and enjoyed some relaxing time in the evening. I plan to get some words toward tomorrow’s count after midnight before I go to bed tonight though.

The Story: In the continuation of the flashback story I started yesterday, while Lorrin is guarding the young prince, she uncovers a plot to assassinate the king.

I also created the cover for my novel today, and that led me to change the title again. I had started out calling it “The King,” then decided I liked “King” better. I have now changed it to “Protector,” where I expect it to stay, at least for a while.

NaNoWriMo Day 1

The Words: 5179 on day 1. I started right at midnight with the midnight sprint, and got to 3120 before stopping for the night/morning. Then this evening, despite already being past par for the day, I wrote some more.

All of this writing, minus the very first 10-minute sprint that I did to get warmed up, was done alongside the Twitter feed of @NaNoWordSprints. I can’t stress enough how motivating it is, and how helpful it can be to have someone else setting time goals and starting times! If you ever find yourself struggling to just get writing (and put aside distractions) or to write quickly without stopping to think a lot or to edit, I suggest checking out that feed (even if you don’t really use Twitter).

One sad thing that I discovered about 5 minutes before midnight was that my favorite place to do the actual writing, Write or Die, doesn’t exist the way it used to. Even when the creator moved on to Write or Die 2, I preferred the original format. It was simple and did everything I needed it to do. Now he’s moved on to Write or Die 3, which may well be better, but it’s just not quite the same. So I set my own timers and wrote on my Neo, which doesn’t yell at me if I stop typing for too long, but still helps me avoid distractions.

The Story: Commander of the northern-most base in an unnamed nation (unnamed because I haven’t named it, not because it’s a mystery in the story), Lorrin Trinnear, receives news that the king and his son are on their way to see how the base is doing. Lorrin then recalls back to when she first met the prince and his father, five years previous, which begins a brief story with some intrigue of its own.

NaNoWriMo Day 28

The Words: 125 written today.

Despite my insistence on writing every day, even if it was only 18 words, to get the badge at the end of the month, yesterday, I had a migraine that went away at suppertime. After supper, I tried to unwind from the stressful day with a video game, and next thing I knew, it was 1 am.

I’ve realized that I might have burnt out this month, and as I mentioned 2 days ago, I also felt like I was dragging out the end of the story. So I put a nice, neat cap on the end of the story with 125 words, and called it a win!

(Yes, I hit 50k words a while ago, but I decided not to validate my win until I put the finishing words into the story, because I could tell my motivation was dropping off.)

The Story: It may have been a little too easy, but Nathan was able to ease his wife’s mind, and Rogan’s brother put the final words into the story.

I will likely not write more in the next 2 days, since the story is done anyway. If I do, it will be a little more brainstorming about things that should have been in this story but weren’t. But if that doesn’t happen, this will be my last word count post for the month. I will probably write a final one at the end of the month, looking back at November, as I have in the past.

NaNoWriMo Day 26

The Words: 350 written today, and 18 yesterday.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving for my side of the family, and we were gone until after midnight. We generally eat our big meal in the afternoon, and then play board games all night. The 18 words were literally a 5-minutes-to-midnight, just-get-some-words-in situation.

Then we ended up going and playing more board games today, because we didn’t quite get to enough of them yesterday. (Part of that was because my sister announced that she’s pregnant, so there was a lot of talking for a while before we got to board games.) So I had my Neo with me (today and yesterday) and wrote a bit more than yesterday.

The Story: I feel a bit like I’m dragging out the ending to this story, which is strange, because normally I feel like I’m rushing the ending. But I didn’t have anything planned for after the climax, and now I’ve just got Nathan and Clark explaining some things about what just happened with Vin to an unhappy Penny. And I’m not happy that I don’t have a good way to end the story. I will probably try to just get to an ending tomorrow, so I can say it’s finished. This story will need a lot of reworking someday though. It might be the first NaNoNovel I’ve drafted where I felt like it wouldn’t just need revision, in whatever capacity, but possibly a full rewrite someday. It just didn’t really have a solid story to it in the end.

Here is episode 5 of the NaNoMusical. This one has my favorite song from the entire musical! And things get real.

NaNoWriMo Day 24

The Words: 2462 written today.

I have to admit, it’s getting more and more difficult to write, after having already hit 50k, and with the story not really going a direction that feels great. But I am determined to write at least some every day, either until the story is done, or until November ends. I got to twitter.com/NaNoWordSprints during a time of one #1k30min after another. I came late for one, so wrote about 700 while I waited for that sprint to end. Then I wrote another 1300 during the next 30-minute sprint. After that, I was into a part that was more fun to write, so I kept going until I realized it was midnight.

The Story: Though some of it was pretty unbelievable, Justin finished updating the others on what he’d learned about Vin’s doings over the last several years. Then, something happened that I’ve been looking forward to since way before I ever started planning this book. Rogan’s brother finally arrived back in Pithea, after being away for a few months. His reunion with his brother was great!

NaNoWriMo Day 23

The Words: 159 written today.

Thanksgiving is always a low word-count day for me. My family’s get-together is on Saturday, so it will also be a low word-count day. Though I didn’t go anywhere today, I still enjoyed a very lazy day and a lot of family time on this mid-week day off work.

The Story: Justin started to relay what had happened with Vin to Penny, Rogan, and Cathy. Though I’ve already forgotten how much detail he heard before he left. Tomorrow, I may have to read back over yesterday’s writing just a little, so I know how this should go.

NaNoWriMo Day 22

The Words: 1982 written today.

Another day getting just past par, which is great after such a slump! Not much more to say here. I also finally wrote with a sprint from @NaNoWordSprints on Twitter, which I haven’t been doing as much lately (no surprise, since I’ve barely even been writing lately). I did one #1k30min, which is where most of the words came from, and then kept going to make sure I passed 1667.

The Story: The climax is definitely over, though I struggled to find the resolution to it that I had planned. I don’t think I’m very good at this kind of thing, which I chalk up mostly to having a decent, tragedy-lite life myself.

I have been remiss in sharing the NaNoMusical as the month has progressed! Here is episode 4!

NaNoWriMo Day 21

The Words: 1829 written today.

I was determined to reach at least par today, despite yet again not getting to writing until after 10pm. I’m amazed by how much I wrote early in the month, and how hard the words are now. It’s partly because I’ve been busier, but even in the time I have, I’m not writing as many words as I could be. But before the month started, I knew this story would be a difficult one to write, given the nature of it. The only reason it went so well earlier in the month is because I did so much fluff writing (characters telling stories about events that had happened in earlier books).

The Story: Vin seemed to be getting talked down, but then had one final surprise for everyone. I won’t say any more than that.
