Daily Challenge Check-in: August 25, 2015

Words/Time: 3005 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 52nd meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through 10 pages of double-spaced text. We started almost an hour late again, but still got through a decent amount. We stopped right at a spot that is a relatively short info dump (2 1/2 paragraphs) that I’m questioning including. However, since the information is definitely important, I’ll have to work on a way to clear it up and even perhaps boil it down before next week.

Words/Time: 3957 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 51st meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through 12 1/2 pages of double-spaced text. Despite it being about an hour shorter than our normal meetings, we got through quite a bit. We’re into part 4 now, and while there’s still plenty left, it scares me a little. When we’re done, I’m going to be faced with the fact that I will soon need to make a decision about how to proceed with my attempt at publishing this thing. I’m also aware that there are more issues to address, and I’m worried that I’ll start to slack off too much after we’re done with regular meetings.

Words/Time: 3560 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 49th meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through almost 12 pages of double-spaced text. There were some issues raised tonight that made me very defensive of my words, but they were all resolved peacefully. I did wander off to the kitchen to scrub a dirty dish while we talked about one though (I use a wireless headset during these meetings), because I can’t sit still when these kinds of issues arise. That was something I only realized I did tonight.

Camp-Participant-2015-Web-BannerIt’s the end of week 4 of Camp NaNo, and there are now only 3 days left. I am about an hour away from my goal of working for an average of an hour per day all month. We’re leaving on Thursday for a 5-day trip to Toronto, so I most likely won’t have time to work on Thurs or Fri. Tomorrow, my kids and I will be spending a lot of the day packing and otherwise getting ready. I had anticipated being done with Camp NaNo tonight, so I wouldn’t have to work on it tomorrow, but I had to skip Sunday, so now I have another day’s work to do. I will do my best to make time tomorrow. It’s just an hour. If that fails, I will figure out some way I can do some work either in the car (though I tend to get carsick if I’m looking at a book, mobile screen, or anything like that, while the car is moving) or in the hotel between Thurs and Fri, during any down time. I’ll fit it in, even if I have to get up before the rest of the family on Friday.

Words/Time: 3603 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 48th meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through almost 11 1/2 pages of double-spaced text. We discussed tonight the fact that the last three meetings have yielded higher than average page counts. We’re not sure if it’s because I’d gotten better at my writing by the time I got this far, if I’ve just gotten better with my revising before the group reads over the story, or if we’re just all starting to care less. Hopefully it’s not the last one.

Camp-Participant-2015-Web-BannerIt’s the end of week 3 of Camp NaNo, so here’s a quick update on my progress–my goal for the month is to work for an average of an hour per day on my revision. I’m happy to say I have still been keeping up with that and then some. I’ve still only skipped one day of revision all month. Any other times I’ve had a rough or busy day, I’ve made sure to get at least 20 minutes of work in. Right now, I’m almost 3 hours above par for the current day, so I’m going into week 4 with some buffer, which is always great!

Words/Time: 3396 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 47th meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through just over 11 pages of double-spaced text. It’s good to know that last week’s higher-than-normal word & page count wasn’t just a fluke, since we weren’t far from that again.

Camp-Participant-2015-Web-BannerCamp NaNo week 2 has past, so here’s a quick update on my progress–my goal for the month is to work for an average of an hour per day on my revision. I’m still doing great with that. I’ve missed one day all month, and I easily made up for it. Right now, I’m almost 2 hours above where I need to be for the NaNo goal. It’s not nearly as exciting as having a word count to share, but I’m happy with the progress I’ve made this month.

Words/Time: 3769 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 46th meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through just under 13 pages of double-spaced text. That may not sound like much, but there are three of us going over every aspect of this story. It is the most intensive revision I will probably ever do on this book. It’s taken us longer than I’d ever hoped to do this, but we’re around halfway through part 3 of 4, so we’re definitely getting there. And along the way, we’re fixing issues in my story world and solidifying weak characters and plot points. Our average page count for one of these meetings is 5-6, so 13 was great.

The first week of Camp NaNo is over, so here’s a quick update on my progress–my goal for the month is to work for an average of an hour per day on my revision. So far, I’m right on par with that. It’s not nearly as exciting as having a word count to share, but I’m still happy that I haven’t skipped any days for the last week.

The unfortunate truth I have to face now, though, is that I can’t work on “Outcast” equally with “Pithea” this month as I’d hoped. Since my Skype editing group caught up with my own advance editing a month or so ago, I feel like I’m barely keeping ahead. And I need to keep ahead, because I’m making a lot of big changes to areas that I know weren’t good before we get there, so we don’t waste our time on those parts. So for a while, I need to focus only on revising “Pithea” so we don’t run out of material to work on some Tuesday night soon.

Words/Time: 1194 words revising “Pithea” with two of my sisters over Skype. Also known as the 45th meeting of the Tri-County Sisterhood of the Traveling Book. We got through just over 5 pages of double-spaced text. We had a much shorter than normal meeting today, going only for an hour than the normal 2-2 1/2 hours. But we moved it later in the week too, and I was glad we were still able to get a meeting in this week.

With Camp NaNo going on, I had planned to work on both “Pithea” and “Outcast” every day. Since I knew I’d get plenty of time in for the day’s goal during the Skype meeting, I decided not to push myself to work on “Outcast” today too. Maybe tomorrow I’ll do only “Outcast” to make up for it.
